Dat oude mannen nog prima kunnen vechten bewees Mark Hunt afgelopen week tijdens UFC Auckland nog. In navolging daarvan lijkt mede “oude man” Chuck Liddell weer zijn handschoenen aan te gaan te trekken. Dat is niet per sé omdat hij het zo leuk vindt, maar heeft een meer financiele reden.
Dat zegt althans huidige middleweight champ Michael Bisping. Die heeft namelijk het een en ander in de wandelgangen gehoord. Aldus The Count:
I’m in the circle, where people tell me things. This is me putting out a disclaimer, if they hear me saying this, I can say ‘I said it was third hand information’, when really it might not be third hand information.
“Somebody at the weekend told me that Chuck Liddell is really pissed off, because he had a pretty sweet deal with the UFC when he left this job. He was an ambassador for the UFC. I believe he was on $1 million a year, that’s the number I heard.
“It was great that the UFC was doing that, but now of course, new UFC owners came in. I heard that Chuck was really pissed off, so that’s why he’s possibly going over to Bellator.”
Of het waar is, is dus een tweede. Maar mocht het zo zijn, kun je je afvragen wat Chuck Liddell nog in een cage te zoeken heeft, of dat nou in de UFC is of onder de Bellator-vlag. Hij is ondertussen 47 jaar en heeft zeker zijn beste dagen achter zich…
Maar hij blijft wel “The Iceman”. Zo zou hij best nog wel eens een oude rivaliteit kunnen oprakelen, vindt ook Bisping:
“Can he compete? Should he comeback? The answer is no. Can he compete, and should he fight against Tito Ortiz? The answer is probably yes.”
