De laatste tijd is er nogal veel te doen om TRT (Testosterone Replacement Therapy). Nu is het zo dat er legitieme redenen zijn om hier gebruik van te maken, maar het aantal vechters dat hiervoor in aanmerking kwam (die ook nog eens eerder verdacht werden van steroidengebruik) werd de laatste tijd toch wel opvallend hoog.
Blijkbaar heeft de staat Nevada (waar de UFC kantoor houdt, in Las Vegas namelijk) er nu genoeg van. Zij hebben namelijk besloten TRT te verbannen.
Dit heeft onmiddelijke gevolgen voor de title match die Vitor Belfort zou aangaan tegen Chris Weidman; deze gaat namelijk niet door. Vitor heeft zich teruggetrokken omdat hij het gevoel heeft zonder TRT geen eerlijke kans te maken. Het positieve nieuws is dat Lyoto Machida zijn plaats zal innemen.
De beslissing in Nevada heeft echter nog meer verstrekkende gevolgen: California sluit zich nu namelijk ook bij dit verhaal aan:
“The California State Athletic Commission fully supports the Nevada Athletic Commission’s decision to eliminate therapeutic use exemptions (TUE) for testosterone replacement therapy in boxing and mixed martial arts,” “California is a strong supporter of anti-doping efforts. As part of California’s anti-doping efforts, the commission recently began the rulemaking process to require meeting World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) standards as the only way to obtain a TUE for TRT.
“This standard is so high that it is an effective ban except under the most extreme circumstances. Until the rulemaking process is complete and the regulations are fully adopted, the commission has a total ban on TRT. California remains committed to protecting the health and safety of athletes and having strict anti-doping standards is one of the ways this is accomplished.
Een vrij duidelijk verhaal dus. De komende tijd zal uitwijzen welke gevolgen hier nog meer aan hangen. Chael Sonnen heeft ook al aangegeven dat het qua carriere wellicht wel eens einde oefening zou kunnen zijn voor hem.
